What is the nasolabial fold and how to manage it?

One of the most frequent consultations is the appearance of the nasolabial fold. This is a crease that runs from the nose to the edge of the lip.

If we go back just a few years, the treatment to manage this rut was to completely fill it in all the way. Currently that is no longer the recommended management and this is for 3 reasons:

  1. We all have a nasolabial fold, including children. For this reason, filling it completely until it disappears gives a very unnatural appearance. The idea is to ATTENUATE IT.
  2. There is a very important artery, the facial artery, which runs precisely along the nasolabial fold. Injecting hyaluronic acid right into that area greatly increases the risk of having a serious complication. To avoid the occurrence of this situation, it is necessary to have a thorough knowledge of facial anatomy and use advanced techniques to reach the area safely.
  3. The nasolabial fold is normal! It has to be there! The problem appears because with the passage of time the bones of the face flatten and the deep fat begins to disappear; This causes the superficial fat to slide towards the center of the face and the nasolabial fold appears. What is there to do? Manage the volumes in the central area of the face and resume the shape they had in youth. This will cause the superficial fat to return to its original place and this groove will fade.

In summary:

  • The nasolabial fold should be ATTENUATED, not eliminated.
  • It must be handled by a professional who has a clear understanding of the anatomy of the face and handles advanced injection techniques.
  • Its cause must be handled rather than simply filled.
